Work Related Upper Limb Disorders/Repetitive Strain Injuries
Injuries to the hands, wrists, elbows and shoulders maybe related to poorly planned systems of work or work stations. Examples of the types of injuries which may be caused include:
• Tenosynovitis – This is used to describe inflammation of the fluid-filled sheath (called the synovium) that surrounds a tendon and leads joint pain, swelling, and stiffness.
• De Quervain’s Syndrome - This is a painful condition that affects tendons where they run through a tunnel on the thumb side of the wrist.
• Tendinitis – Tendinitis refers to inflammation or irritation of a tendon.
• Trigger finger – When one or more of the tendons in a hand become “locked” it can be difficult to bend the affected finger(s) or thumb.
• Carpal tunnel syndrome – When the median nerve gets trapped or compressed in the wrist at the carpal tunnel, one may suffer symptoms such as pain, weakness numbness and tingling in the fingers and thumb.
• Tennis elbow – This condition causes pain around the outside of the elbow. It can be caused by excessive hammering, bricklaying, lifting with outstretched fingers under pressure.
• Rotator cuff syndrome – The shoulder is controlled by a group of 4 muscles known as the rotator cuff. These muscles and the tendons in the shoulder are vulnerable to injuries such as tears. Rotator cuff injuries can be caused by a significant injury to the shoulder or as a result of progressive degeneration or wear and tear of the tendon tissue. Repetitive overhead activity or heavy lifting over a long period of time can irritate or damage the tendons.
These conditions can be naturally occurring and therefore they are not necessarily related to work. Compensation claims for these types of injury are rarely straightforward and should be dealt with by a specialist solicitor. Woodward are pleased to consider accepting instructions in these types of claims.
