Noise deafness and tinnitus
Every day one hears sounds from our environment such as traffic noise, people speaking, the tv or radio and household appliances. These are usually at a safe level which doesn’t damage hearing. However, if the sounds are too loud then sensitive structures in the inner ear may get damaged and cause noise deafness and, sometimes, tinnitus (tinnitus is the name that is given if one hears noises – such as whistling or ringing or humming sounds - that aren't caused by an outside source). Noise deafness and tinnitus can be caused by extreme sounds such as an explosion or from regular exposure to loud sounds over a period of time.
Many workplaces have machinery which generate excessively loud sounds. Noise deafness and tinnitus can usually be prevented by employees wearing hearing protection such as ear plugs or ear muffs.
If a person is regularly exposed to excessive levels of noise at work without being required to wear hearing protection, then they may be able to claim compensation. Such claims can be very complicated – particularly if there have been a number of “noisy employers.” Woodward have successfully pursued many noise deafness claims and are happy to consider accepting instructions in this type of claim.
