HAVS/VWF - Hand-arm Vibration Syndrome / Vibration White Finger
Hand-arm vibration syndrome / vibration white finger (“HAVS”) is caused by using vibrating hand-held power tools or machinery for excessive periods of time. The condition is preventable but once the damage has been done then the damage is permanent.
The condition can be serious and disabling. Typical symptoms include the fingers going white in the cold (this is known as blanching), initially at the tips of the fingers most exposed to the vibration but eventually spreading to all of the fingers and the tips of the thumbs, numbness, tingling, loss of nerve sensitivity and a significant loss of dexterity. There is a direct relationship between the amount of exposure to vibration and the severity of symptoms. The HSE estimate that 2 million workers are at risk of developing HAVS.
As in many industrial claims, in HAVS claims, it is often necessary to trace companies and their insurers before claim can begin. A full employment history is needed. Expert evidence from a Vascular Surgeon and an Engineer will be required. As these claims are complex one should instruct a Solicitor who has a specialism in dealing with HAVS claims. Woodward are happy to consider accepting instructions in this type of claim.
